Aerith is actually the main character, it was her after all who saved the planet. Tifa would be a secondary character, and Cloud's second love interest, while yes he had two love interests, Amano still drew the main heroine with their main heroic love interest. Yes Amano knew about Tifa already, but that didn't stop from drawing all heroines with the main heroes of each game:
